Change
It has been said that you should never change for someone else. This being true, it is not to say that you should never change. Change is what keeps life interesting, keeps you feeling young, and keeps you alive. If you fail to change, you have missed the point of life. There are two forms of change, and a clear difference stands between the two.
The first type of change is the kind that should not happen. While you are not the only person you should be living for, you are the only person who really understands you. If a person betrays himself or herself by changing in a way that they don't want to change, then they have done themselves a great disservice. The only person someone should change for is himself or herself. By this, I don't mean that they shouldn't change anti-social behavior, but augmenting a critical part just to make someone else think more highly of the person is not only harmful to that person, but actually sets them back in the overall goals that are required to achieve in life.
One of the biggest examples of this failing is in relationships. Very often people seek that which they cannot have. The obvious way to make someone notice you is to become the thing that they pay attention to. This is harmful to yourself in that you are directed away from that which you are meant to be. You begin to lie to yourself and the person whom you should absolutely be honest with is yourself. (Honesty is a topic for another day.) More often than not, if you are yourself, you will find that the person you are trying to attract is not the right person for you. Look around for the person who is staring at you, that is probably the one that will make you the happiest and teach you the most.
The second type of change is the good kind. Not necessarily the fun kind, but the sort that makes you into what you want to be. Everyone should grow, everyone should hope to achieve something that they are not currently, else they will find themselves feeling like a zombie. I have changed much in the past year, mostly in areas I was not aware that I needed to grow in. These are the most fun areas to develop. When you are aware that you are changing, it becomes too much like school and dull. When you create a new area of yourself, more often than not you will discover new areas that were not thought possible.
Change is a tricky subject. If it happens too fast, people start to alienate themselves. If it happens too slowly, life becomes boring. My favorite thing about change remains that I never know what it is going to bring. A person must remain open to new ideas and attitudes; these are the seeds of change. Once a person learns to accept the downsides to life, they will be happier in their pursuit of the good things and that which makes them want to live.
